Sauna prevents dementia

Growing older is a gift - but it also demands more of us. The brain needs to be kept sharp, especially to avoid dementia. The body needs movement and recovery. And perhaps most importantly, we need time for ourselves. Time for silence, warmth, cold water and nature.

At KOK, we don't believe in quick fixes. But we do believe in simple, doable rituals that create profound effects over time. That's why we'd like to invite you over the age of 60 into a new winter routine - with 20 % discount sauna at KOK in Oslo.

KOK Oslo Sauna can help with dementia

A powerful combination: heat and cold

Sauna and ice baths or cold baths have long been known for their health-promoting effects - but in recent times, science has really opened our eyes to how extensive the benefits are. Not just for the body, but for your brain.

By raising body temperature and triggering natural stress and recovery responses, both sauna and cold bath set in motion a cascade of processes that improve circulation, sleep, mood and cognitive performance.

This combination can help to:

  • Reduce inflammation and stiffness in the body
  • Increase blood flow to the brain
  • Improve the balance of the autonomic nervous system
  • Release neurotransmitters such as dopamine and endorphins

Increase levels of BDNF - a protein linked to learning and memory

Sauna and Alzheimer's risk - what does the research say?

A large long-term study from the University of Finland (Laukkanen et al., 2016) followed over 2,000 men aged 42-60 for 20 years. The results were striking:

Men who used a sauna 4-7 times per week had:

  • 66 % lower risk of dementia
  • 65 % lower risk of Alzheimer's disease

Researchers believe this can be linked to the combination of increased blood flow to the brain, a reduction in stress hormones and an anti-inflammatory effect. In other words more than just wellness - It's brain training at a cellular level.

Cold baths - a boost for body and mind

After a calm and deep warm-up in the sauna, a short cold bath provides a momentary shock to the body - but a positive one. For those over 60, this can help:

  • Better blood circulation and oxygen supply
  • Less joint and muscle pain
  • Higher energy levels and better sleep
  • Mental clarity and better mood
  • Increased tolerance to stress and cold

But: cold baths are not for everyone. It is important to take it easy and build tolerance gradually. Use the ladder rather than jumping or diving. And maybe just go down to your knees.

Important information: if you have a heart condition, take it easy

Ice swimming and rapid temperature changes require the heart to be able to handle sudden stresses. If you have:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Unstable blood pressure
  • Arrhythmias or pacemaker

... you should consult your doctor before you start with ice bathing or long sauna sessions. At KOK we always recommend: Listen to your body. Start gently. Seek advice.

Questions and answers (FAQ)

Are saunas safe for seniors?

Yes - for most people over 60, a sauna is completely safe and healthy. Start slowly, drink plenty of water and listen to your body. If you have any underlying illnesses, we recommend talking to your doctor first.

Is ice bathing dangerous?

Often not. For healthy people, cold bathing is safe and effective - but it can be risky for people with heart problems or low blood pressure. Talk to your doctor before you start.

Can I be naked in the sauna?

No, you can't. You can use swimwear or a towel. At KOK, we want everyone to feel comfortable - we have space for all types of bodies and needs.

Can I bring a friend with me?

Absolutely. Many people come with friends, family or neighbors - but it's also quite common (and lovely) to come alone.

How to order I?

Go to our booking page, choose your date and time, and use the discount code FOREBYGG20 to get 20 % off. You can also meet up directly - we are happy to help you.

What can prevent dementia?

A healthy diet, regular exercise, socializing, good sleep and mental activity can reduce the risk. New research also shows that regular sauna use can help prevent dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
